SOUTHERN WINS GVC TITLE, MEN FINISH THIRD

Shasta College sophomore Grace Southern won the Golden Valley Conference championship for women's cross-country Friday and the Knights had three overall top five finishes across the men's and women's race.

Southern, who was third at the GVC championship in 2019, won the 5,000 meter race in 21 minutes. Shasta College's Zoey Bishop followed Southern for a second-place finish, running in 21:48 for the Knights to take the top two spots.

"Grace and Zoey dominated as they have all year and now look to have an extremely successful track season," said Shasta College cross-country coach Taylor Duncan.

For the men, Marcus Francescut was the top Knight to finish the 5,000-meter course, taking fourth in 18:31. Butte's Bailey Rockholt won the race in 17:58.

"Marcus has been battling some injury early on and was finally healthy and improved on his time from the first meet at Shasta by almost 2 minutes," said Duncan.

Shasta's Ethen Collins was eighth in 19:56, Kenyon Riley was 13th in 26:06, Jeshua Wilkinson was 14th in 26:07 and Isaiah Wilson was 16th in 29:01.

Butte won the men's GVC title with 33 points, College of the Redwoods was second with 36 points and Shasta was third with 55 points.

"I'm very proud of our team for coming out and competing in such a difficult year, the most important aspect for these student athletes is getting back them active and competing for their mental and physical health.
