REDDING, Calif. — The Shasta College Knights closed out Golden Valley Conference play in thrilling fashion Monday night, defeating rival Butte College 104-102 in overtime in their home Gym. The high-scoring battle showcased grit, poise, and plenty of late-game drama as the Knights rallied behind a big second-half surge and clutch free-throw shooting.
After falling behind 49–40 at halftime, Shasta stormed back with a 53-point second half to force the 93–93 deadlock at the end of regulation. The Knights outlasted the Roadrunners 11–9 in the extra period to earn a hard-fought two-point victory and cap their regular-season schedule on a high note.
Sophomore Scott Steffan led all scorers with 37 points, including a remarkable 18-for-20 performance from the free-throw line. Guard Mason Chambers added 26 points, hitting six three-pointers, while post Cheik Diop provided a dominant presence inside with 14 points and 22 rebounds. Jose Cruz-Martinez helped orchestrate the offense with six assists, setting the table for Shasta's perimeter shooting.
Butte countered with a balanced effort led by De'Nage Kelly's 25 points and the combination of Jah Van and Kwasi Moses, who each tallied 21 points. Despite a powerful inside effort and a plus-seven rebounding margin (50–43), the Roadrunners were hurt by 31 team fouls, including five technicals, that allowed Shasta to control the pace late from the foul line.
The Knights hit 72.7% of their free throws (32–44) and connected on 12 three-pointers, holding off Butte's 45% shooting performance from the field.
With the victory, Shasta wraps up their season on a high note and gains valuable momentum heading into the offseason, defeating their long-time rivals in one of the most entertaining finishes of the year.
